Anhand der gebräuchlichen Laborbefunde des Gerinnungssystems lässt sich diese nicht eindeutig bestimmen, sondern lediglich ein Verdacht äußern. Die alleinige Veränderung der plasmatischen Gerinnung über Quick bzw. INR und PTT reicht dazu nicht aus. Die Beschreibung eines charakteristischen Krankheitsbildes (z.B. DIC in Verbindung mit Sepsis, Schock oder perioperativ) sollte vorliegen. Vitamin K ist zur Behandlung der akuten plasmatischen Gerinnungsstörung unwirksam, da es erst nach ca. 2 Tagen einen Effekt erzielt. Je nach Stadium werden Gerinnungsfaktoren (PPSB, Fibrinogen), Fibrinolysehemmer und Thrombozyten substituiert.
